Thank you, Rais, for your tribute to Ms. Bonino's courage in traveling herself to Zaire in 1996-97 to witness the atrocities committed by Rwanda against Rwandan refugees and also many Congolese. What stood out for me is your disclosing that you yourself as a very young displaced person at the time were forced to walk more than two thousand kilometers toward Kisangani on foot, witnessing and enduring the suffering yourself. I'm glad you survived to tell the truthful stories that need to be heard.

Please note that according to Lino Bordin, ex UNHCR staff member,800,000 Rwandans were killed in Zaire in 1996-97. He spent three years on the ground. They (the UK embassy via RPF in Zaire) silenced him too back then. This is one of the worst, if not the worst, genocide in the world since the second world war yet silence. Please cover the Onana trial whose appeal is in June 2027 ! Recently, after years of judicial proceedings, since 2005, French soldiers were acquitted from any involvement in the genocide. Those who harassed the soldiers for decades are the same NGOs (Survie, LICRA, FIDH) that are harassing Onana. Yet this recent supreme court decision actually corroborates Onana's research, but all French media is silent....it's despicable what they are willing to do for Congo's critical minerals...

She may have been courageous in 1996-97 but refused to give a video interview later on in life on what she had seen. Can you provide one recent link to the situation in Congo or even in the past 20 years where she wrote and/ or said something? She sold-out big time ! If I had seen what she saw (allegedly over 800,000 Rwandans were massacred and/or died in Zaire at the time at the hands of the RPF-led invasion) I would surely not have remained silent for 30 years, I mean it's a Holocaust, 12 million Congolese dead since 1996 and 8 million internally displaced today in the DRC. There are real heroes such as historian Charles Onana persecuted in France for documenting the historical truth on those times ...let's at least get our heroes straight! A Soros funded EU sold out puppet isn't an anti-colonialist hero nor someone standing up for human rights !

Dear Nicoleta, thanks for pointing out these detail. but If Emma Bonino refused to speak further about what she witnessed, that silence deserves examination. My article isn't trying to say that she was perfect in her entire political career, or that she was the only one doing good things in Congo. It's just recognizing one specific thing she did. When several refugee where killled and hunted by the RPF.Bonino went to see what was happening, and she spoke out because nobody was talking about it. Recognizing this one act doesn't mean we're saying she's never made any mistakes in her politics. It's just about giving credit where credit is due, for this one thing she did. honouring one person’s contribution does not require erasing everyone else’s. History is not a competition in which only one witness may be recognised. . Charles Onana’s work and the legal controversies surrounding him can—and should—be discussed on their own merits. But honouring one person’s contribution does not require erasing everyone else’s. History is not a competition in which only one witness may be recognised. Calling someone a "Soros-funded EU puppet" is just a label, it's not a real argument. If we want to understand our heroes and history, we need to look at specific actions, and we need to do it with evidence, context, and consistency. We can see that Bonino was brave in 1996-97, but we can also criticize her for being silent later on. These two things aren't opposites, they can both be true at the same time. We should be able to judge people on what they do, not just on some label or idea we have of them. It's about being fair and looking at the whole picture.

Thank you for your response yes I agree she did an excellent job back then…I even cite her in my film on this (as you see I credit when there is credit to give!) FILM called COOL OPERATOR One man’s nonviolent struggle in a violent world you can see on U tube. As an Italian I am aware of Bonino’s political activities in Italy. (below info on Soros links and funding) No I do not agree with you that she is a hero, as a hero is someone that is consistent and does not refuse an interview a decade later when the situation has not changed and even contributes to the obfuscation of the origin of the Congolese war. No I think we as intellectuals or writers have to call out those that don’t stand up to high standards so sometimes I wonder why someone takes the time to write a few kind words on someone that sold out almost her entire life in the most egregious way in Italian politics, yet academics remain silent on someone such as Charles Onana who is battling almost alone the recognition of this international war which began in the GLR in 1990and who has been denouncing the genocide since three decades, and never stopped despite the harassment and now even judicial harassment he faces. So since we can only write so much I think it’s best, considering the dire states and current genocide Congo is suffering today, to know out real heroes and allies in this pitiful world.

(here see a quick google search on her toes with Soros: George Soros has directly funded political activities in Italy associated with Emma Bonino, specifically through direct, legally documented financial donations to her political party, +Europa (+Europe).

Italian public records and media investigations confirm that Soros has been one of the primary individual donors to the party. These contributions are transparently declared to the presidency of the Italian Chamber of Deputies as required by Italian law.

Political Funding Details

Direct Donations: Public financial declarations from 2019 showed that George Soros contributed €99,789 to +Europa, while his wife, Tamiko Bolton, donated an additional €100,000.

2022 Election Campaign: In the lead-up to the September 2022 Italian general election, Soros provided over €1 million distributed among six individual candidates from +Europa (including party leaders Riccardo Magi and Benedetto Della Vedova) to support their political campaigns.

Party Stance: Representatives of +Europa have openly acknowledged and defended these funds, stating that they are "regular contributions" that they proudly claim, as Soros shares the party's pro-European Union, socially liberal values.

🤝 Professional and Institutional Ties

Beyond direct party financing, Bonino and Soros have maintained a long-standing institutional relationship centered around international human rights and globalization:

Open Society Foundations (OSF): Bonino served as a member of the Global Board for Soros's

International Crisis Group: In October 2015, Soros—acting as a trustee for the International Crisis Group—personally presented Bonino with the Fred Cuny Award for her career achievements in humanitarian action.

European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR): Both figures were co-founders and early backers of the ECFR, a pan-European think tank aimed at promoting a cohesive European foreign policy

Nicoletta, thank you for your thoughtful reply. We agree that Emma Bonino is not a hero beyond criticism. I wrote about a particular act at a particular moment, for which many Congolese and Rwandans remain grateful. That gratitude does not require us to endorse her entire political career or remain silent about what she did later.

Charles Onana’s work also deserves serious attention. Recognising one person’s contribution does not erase another’s. We can hold people accountable without withholding credit where it is due.
